Sussex Border Path

Alfold to A29 South of Ockley (Surrey)

(9 Miles)

Steady, reasonably level walking on good paths and tracks which follow the County Boundary closely. Refreshments, shop and buses from Rudgwick.

On reaching B2133 at Alfold Bars (GR 037333), turn left, and in 100 yards, opposite 'Sir Roger Tichbonne' P.H., turn right along Pigbush Lane. In half a mile keep new buildings of 'Upper Songhurst Farm' on left and make for wood ahead. On entering wood, bear left and in about a third of a mile turn left on wide track with conifer plantation on right. Pass a pond and bear right through weighted gate on another track until you reach a wide clearing where several tracks meet. (GR 052336). Take the '3rd exist' (almost ahead and the narrowest) through woodland. After half a mile, cross school driveway and field ahead toward cottage and exist to A281 road at GR 064341.

Cross A281 and continue on unclassified road opposite signposted Baynards and Cranleigh (Hillhouse Lane). In a third of a mile, at T-junction, go straight ahead on woodland path beside high deer fence. On leaving wood continue ahead with fence on left. Ascend to enter more woodland. Leave wood over stile and go ahead on headland path (on northern edge of woodland at first). Continue up slope, heading east, keeping two pairs of oaks to left, to reach stile at edge of thin belt of trees. Go ahead along fence line, curving left until you reach barway. Follow edge of wood but look out for gap on right giving access to wood; then follow path within edge of wood. After sharp dip, fork right up through trees and curve right at top of rise to another stile on left leading to a short section of pasture. Cross this diagonally (east) to another stile, turn right down field edge into twitten leading out to road at Rudgwick (GR 091344). Turn right.

From the B2128 road in Rudgwick, take path through churchyard which leaves road by 'Kings Head' P.H. Go through kissing gate and across pasture to another kissing gate. Turn left on a metalled drive and, in a few yards, by 'High Croft Cottage' go ahead along headland in same direction. Later cross another metalled track and an open field ahead, just before entering woodland. Ignore side path and, on leaving wood, follow drive round to side of 'Hermongers'. At T-junction with mettaled drive turn left until you reach 'Lodge House' by main entrance gate. Turn right here over stile and head east across open field to towards copse on other side. Join concrete farm road and turn left. At 'Bury St.Austin's Lodge' (GR 109352) cross north/south track, go through yard area and continue eastwards on concrete track to 'Ridge Farm'. Go through farm to reach public road (GR 121356). Turn left and shortly go right on field path, avoiding 'Honeywood House'. Continue NE through woodland, ignoring side tracks, to reach a road by a lodge. Then turn sharply back right and follow narrow lane to 'Monks Farm' (GR 130630). At farm turn left up course of Stane St. and, at top of rise, turn right through field gate and cross field, aiming for left edge of trees ahead. Continue along left edge of next field and then on path within belt of trees. Where this widens out into broad woodland and main path curves left, turn right and out through bridle gate to field. Continue east along left edge of this field with wood on left. Where wood curves right turn left on track which descends steeply through wood, over plank bridge, and up to A29 road at GR 143367.
