Sussex Border Path
Bewl Bridge Reservoir to the Moor
(12 Miles)
The Bewl Bridge Reservoir perimeter path has been carefully laid out and landscaped in sharp contrast to the rather squalid fenced route along the edge of the Weir Wood Reservoir (part of the Mid-Sussex link). After Union Street we are back in typical High Wealden scenery.
After passing through bridlegate in reservoir perimeter fence, turn left and follow clear track along northern perimeter of Reservoir for over 2 miles until you reach a road at GR 670334. Turn left along road and, in a little over 100 yards, turn right on a path signposted to 'Visitor Centre'. On reaching a boat parking area, keep round right edge of it, and just beyond access road to sailing club 'beach', go right on a gravel path through woodland. Cross another access road and follow clear path to 'Visitor Centre' (an information kiosk). Beyond 'Centre',bear right and descend flight of steps to follow footpath along top of Reservoir dam. Follow the OS map. No description.
On reaching road at Union St. (GR 709312) turn left for a few yards only before turning right on a wide track. In just over a quarter of a mile, after passing farm buildings at Quedley, go straight ahead through gap and bear left around left edge of field ahead, then follow it down crest of ridge (due S). Keep down right edge of next field with coppiced woodland on right. After 150 yards, fork right into this woodland, following clear track downhill, across stream, and up to far edge of wood. Go through gate and turn sharply back left to drop downhill along wood edge. Cross footbridge and stile at bottom corner and climb along left edge of 2 fields, crossing area of rough ground and stile between them. At top of second field, bear right, skirting to right of wood and pond. Go through two gates near house, then over stile into wood. In 60 yards, bear left along roughly metalled track. Opposite water trough on left of track, turn right through gap into field and climb, cutting across field corner to stile and enclosed path out to GR 716300. Turn right along A21 for 150 yards before going left through field gate (opposite entrance to Mount Pumps Oast). Head east on grassy track, then with hedge on right. At bottom of hill, go over stile, cross meadow and follow short length of dirt track over stream. In 100 yards, turn left over remains of stile in fence and cross field to gateway on access track. Turn right passing buildings of 'Brookgate Farm' on right. Turn right and left through buildings and continue to right of farm house heading east on a green way down to stream bank.
Ignore paths to left and right and go ahead on winding, indistinct path over stream/ditch, through strip of woodland and over stile. Go half left, uphill across field to pick up and follow course of stream and woodland on right through 2 fields with stile between them. In second field corner, cross stile into woodland. Join track coming from behind on right and in 40 yards turn right over sleeper bridge into field. Turn left and follow headland round and eastwards. Pass house and garden on left, swap headlands and continue eastwards. Cross track (there is a gap in hedge on other side of track a few yards to the left) and head half right across field (ESE) to gate in next hedge. Cross next field heading a little left of house ahead and exit to road through gate at GR743302.
