Sussex Border Path

Bewl Bridge Reservoir to the Moor

(12 Miles)

The Bewl Bridge Reservoir perimeter path has been carefully laid out and landscaped in sharp contrast to the rather squalid fenced route along the edge of the Weir Wood Reservoir (part of the Mid-Sussex link). After Union Street we are back in typical High Wealden scenery.

After passing through bridle gate in reservoir perimeter fence turn left and follow clear track along northern perimeter of Bewl Water for almost two miles until you reach a road, disappearing under water to right at GR 670334. Turn left along road and take second drive on right, signed as ‘Round Bewl Water Walk (footpath only)’. On reaching boat parking area go straight ahead. At access road to sailing club ‘beach‘, turn left and, almost immediately, right along a path signed to Public Car Park. Cross another access road and follow path ahead through partly cleared woodland. Pass to right of Visitor Centre and Restaurant and to left of small children’s play area, then turn right down steps and follow path along top of reservoir dam. Perimeter path continues round wooded headland and on for more than a mile to reach road at GR 700321. Turn right with road across causeway/dam. A few yards beyond dam, turn left over stile, follow wide fenced strip to second stile, then continue across rough pasture and into wood. Cross footbridge and climb through wood. Disregarding signed crossing path, continue up through wood. Leave wood over stile by gate and follow track ahead out to B2087 at Union Street (GR 709312).

Go left along road for a few yards only before turning right along wide track. In just over quarter of a mile, after passing farm buildings at Quedley, turn left by flagpole and shortly right, soon between fences. Go over stile and along left edge of golf course area with hedge on left. Soon after hedge ends, bear half right across golf playing area to join and follow right edge with wood on right. Shortly fork right on signed path down and up through wood. Leave wood over stile and turn sharply left downhill along left field edge. Cross footbridge and stile at bottom corner and climb along left field edge, on within left edge of woodland and then along left edge of second field. Cross barway and bear right skirting to right of wood. Feed into and follow hard access track. Just short of house at top of rise, go right through double gate and along left field edge. After 50 yards, turn left over stile, through wicket gate and along left edge of garden to join A21 at GR 716300.

Turn right beside A21 for 150 yards before going left through gate (opposite entrance to Mount Pumps Oast). Head slightly right across field and go through gateway. Follow left edge of next field for first few yards, then head out across field without change of direction to join and follow right field edge. At bottom of hill, go over stile and follow wide grass path ahead. Cross stream and, after 100 yards, go left through gap and head half right across field. Go through gap in belt of trees and turn right along right edge of field beyond. From corner go forward along access track ahead, following waymarks right and left between buildings at Brookgate Farm. Pass to right of main farmhouse to enter enclosed track. Cross footbridge (not wider bridge on right), leave copse over stile and head uphill across middle of field to pick up and follow woodland on right along right edge of two fields with stile and footbridge between them. In second field corner go over stile into woodland. Join track coming from behind on right and after 60 yards go right over sleeper bridge. Turn left to follow headland path. Pass house and garden on left, go through gap and continue along right field edge. Cross track and head slightly right across next field to gate. Cross next field, aiming slightly to left of house to join road over stile at GR 743302.

Turn left and after 10 yards, go right along right edge of orchard. In field corner, side-step to right through wide gap and resume previous direction along clear track across another orchard. Maintain direction along right edge of third orchard. In corner go ahead along enclosed path. Emerging over footbridge and stile into field corner, go ahead along right field edge to stile and left along left edge of next field. In corner go right along headland track. After 40 yards go left over stile and along right field edge. A few yards short of corner go right down bank and turn left along farm access drive. Join and bear right along drive from Hemsill House. Follow it out to road at The Moor at GR 756296. (Revised March/April 2010).
