Sussex Border Path
Blackdown (West Sussex) to Alfold (Surrey)
(10.5 Miles)
After descending from Blackdown to Gospel Green, the path follows a distinct boundary bank, for much of the way along a low ridge dropping away on both Surrey and Sussex sides of the border.
CAR PARKS Small car park at the start of this section at Blackdown (GR 923307). If this is full, there is another a short distance away on the road to Haslemere.
From hairpin bend on road at Blackdown, route veers away right just short of notice 'Aldworth House' (GR923306). Route runs parallel with drive for a time then drops downhill. Where path divides again, turn left down hollow way and continue to join road at Roundhurst Common.
At Roundhurst Common (GR 928304) turn left along road. Fork right at next junction, then after three quarters of a mile, turn left at T-Junction. After 250 yards, at another T-junction at Gospel Green (GR942315), keep ahead along bridleway opposite which follows wide track in rew for about half a mile to reach A283 road on county boundary (GR 947324) half way between North Chapel and Chiddingfold. Turn left for 150 yards along A283 and, opposite road turning to Haselmere, turn right over stile to follow headland path east. After first field, enter wood and continue east ignoring side tracks. After leaving wood, keep prominent boundary bank on right, passing through 2 fields, then further woodland*and finally, several more fields to reach road at White's Hill (GR968329). * (in which there is a staggered crossing of a heavy used track). Follow the OS map. No description.
On reaching road at 'Dungate Farm' (GR 997329), follow farm access track ahead, leaving farm buildings on left and subsequently following Sussex side of hedge and crossing stile into wood. 150 yards into wood, turn left, then right, to cross boundary bank and continue on Surrey side. It is important now to follow boundary bank on right. Go over plank bridge in hollow, then up and over to second stream, unbridged. Follow track ahead ( alittle off official line) then turn left along boundary bank at edge of conifer plantation. In about 200 yards you will emerge onto forest ride; turn left here and, at another crossing track in 75 yards (by viewing platform) continue ahead on narrower track. After 250 yards turn right on crossing track (GR 012327) and follow it for over half a mile to house called 'Forest View'. Here turn left on path along garden fence to left of house and drive. Continue on enclosed path along field edge and then within left edge of wood until path becomes wide track between banks. Still in same direction, go over plank bridge and stile, cross section of pasture to Barbury Bridge and , beyond bridge, climb to cross disused Wey and Arun canal by causeway (GR 928325). Continue on track ahead, passing through 'Oakhurst' farmyard and along access lane to reach B2133 road at GR 037332.
