Sussex Border Path

The Moor to Ewhurst Green

(5.5 Miles)

The moated castle at Bodiam must surely be one of the finest in the country, and the Sussex Border Path provides a striking approach to it from the North. This section of the route, along clear and easy-to-follow field paths and tracks, passes through more fine undulating countryside.

On reaching the road at The Moor (GR 756296), turn right and, almost immediately, left. Cross next road and follow road opposite (signposted Bodiam). At next junction, go straight across and follow Stream Lane. In about half a mile, opposite a bungalow called 'Thairstones', fork right along a gravel track. This continues as a green lane after passing old oast at East Heath. Follow this old road for half a mile to metalled road at GR 768283. Turn left along road and, in under 100 yards, where road bends left, keep right along metalled access drive. Go straight through buildings at 'Conghurst' and continue on muddy track. In 350 yards, turn right on clear track, with hedge on left, aiming towards white buildings on low hill head. At bottom, cross causeway and footbridge, then climb with wood on right. Beyond last building, turn right and follow clear unfenced track down to where 2 woods converge. Cross stream and follow sunken track uphill, parallel to power lines, before dropping to Lower Northlands (GR 780269). G through farm buildings and follow farm access track for nearly half a mile to road at GR 783264. Turn right along road and, in a few yards, just past house on left, go left. Route goes obliquely uphill but may be obstructed, necessitating headland diversion. From top far corner go through gate and cross next field, keeping left of paddock and converted oast houses ahead. Descend to Bodiam Castle and out to road through Castle car park (GR 783254). From entrance to Castle car park, turn left along road and over River bridge. About 50 yards beyond bridge, turn left over stile by white gate. Follow river bank for 250 yards before turning away from river along near side of ditch (the first one you come to). On reaching Kent and East Sussex Railway line, turn right and follow it until you can cross line via 2 metal field gates. G round barn ahead and over sleeper bridge. Follow hedge and ditch ahead. In 400 yards cross plank bridge and wooden rails ahead (ignore gate on right) and immediately bear left uphill (ESE) keeping hedge close on left. (in a few yards, a ditch and double fence obstruct but can be bypassed via a culvert 50 yards to right). Follow hedge on left and, in just over 200 yards, go over stile by field gate. In another 100 yards go over stile on left and cross narrow belt of woodland, coming out through swing gate. Turn right uphill with hedge on right and join road at GR 793244, turning left into Ewhurst Green.
